Contrary to the first term :
REPORT:
This (2009 - 2010) Academic Year turned out to be a very active one full of
events.
It all started with the planning session attended by the Programme Officer Mrs.
A. A. Kulkarni on 9th July ’2009, where the good news was announced that the
enrollment strength of the unit was increased from 110 to 150 volunteers by the
University N. S. S. Cell.
Mr. R. P. Paul, the area co-ordinator along with Dr. Madhuri Samant addressed
the volunteers in the orientation session. So the total enrollment rose upto 125
volunteers which included 55 Males & 66 Females.
As per the rules of the University all these were equally divided in to 3 groups
namely
1) Disaster Management cell
2) Red Ribbon club for creating awareness for HIV/ AIDS
3) Eco Club
The 5 days leadership Residential Training Programme was attended by Prajyot
Dhumal & Ranjeet Yadav at Sathaye College.
A) Disaster
Management Report :
Under the leadership of Bhavik Parikh, a total of 50 volunteers enrolled for
Disaster management. They participated in an awareness campaign against Swine
Flu in their strike period of the University lectures. Similarly they
participated in all the University activities as well as college activities.
They attended Peace rallies on 5th Aug. ( i.e. Hiroshima Day), 2nd Oct. (3rd
International Non-Violence Day), 15th Oct. (World March for Peace) 17th Oct.
(Human Chain formed by the Police) and 30th Jan. 2010.
For the “ World March For Peace ” - A signature campaign was also organised
where totally 600 + signatures were collected. The Principal Dr. M. B. Madlani &
the Vice Principal Dr. N. Roy signed for the campaign. The photographs of the
March were sent to the authorities of the “ World March for Peace” which they
displayed on their website.
In the Residential Campaign, 2 lecture-cum-slide show of the Chief Fire and
Security Officer Mr. Gajendra Jagtap of Reliance Energy was conducted in the
Auditorium of Dahanu Thermal Power Station on 19th Dec. ‘2009.
With the consent of the central N. S. S cell of Mumbai University, and in
collaboration with Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation, a two days workshop on
Disaster Management was conducted in our college premises on the 5th and 6th of
Jan 2010. The Chief Fire officer of the Andheri Fire Brigade, Mr. Manoj Sawant
and the Chief of B.M.C. Disaster Management cell, Mr. Mahesh Narvekar guided the
gathering of 60 N. S. S & Non NSS members and our 7 members of supporting staff
including Mrs. A. A. Kulkarni & Dr. Naringrekar. All of them received
certificates of participation from the authorities of B. M. C.
As per the guidelines received in this workshop, we will be demonstrating a Mock
Drill and will also begin to observe 15th October as Disaster preparedness Day
from the next academic year.
We also received a prompt reply by phone from Mahesh Narvekar as he received our
letter of Thanks.
NSS REPORT
2010-2011:
The total strength of the unit is 120 students. The planning session was
attended by Programme Officer Samya Shinde on 28th June 2010 at Vidyarthi
Bhavan, Churchgate.
The enrolment drive started in July with NSS student volunteers going class to
class for registration. A registration counter was also set up where students
could register themselves for the NSS. In July Mrs.Kulkarni, the ex PO & Samya
Shinde, PO conducted an orientation for the enrolled students to brief them up
with the NSS activities, motto & goal of NSS. A core committee of ten leaders
was formed. Following a brain storming session a number of activities to be
conducted was outlined & planned. It was decided that along with the regular
college & university level activities, area based projects would include health
awareness campaign, consumer awareness drive, disaster management preparedness,
cleanliness campaign, AIDS awareness campaign with MDACS would be carried out.
The blood donation drive was carried out on 16th July 2010 with Think
Foundation. The college tied up with Nanavati Hospital. A total of 101 units of
blood was collected. Thalessemia check-up camp was conducted on 17th July with
overwhelming response from the students.
The students conducted a health awareness drive in the two adopted areas of
Daulat Nagar and Khotwadi. They sentisized the residents through door to door
campaign about the causes , symptoms and precautions of the 5 rampant diseases
during the monsoon, namely Typhoid, Cholera, Dengue, Malaria & Jaundice. They
prepared posters and flash cards for this purpose. They covered about five
hundred households.
The NSS unit in collaboration with BMC and United Way Mumbai Helpline
participated in the project ‘Youth for Healthy Mumbai’ under which they carried
out Malaria Awareness Campaign in Juhu Koliwada area and Chandrabai Nagar (K-
west ward). The students were trained as health educators by Dr. Dengle from
K-west ward. They conducted a door to door awareness campaign and carried out
the awareness drive as per instructions. The total number of beneficiaries was
about 1000 people. A rally was also organized in the same area. About 40
students participated in the entire health awareness programme. The programme
was coordinated by student leaders Maria Das and Rahul Jadhav.
Peace Rally was conducted at Azad Maidan on 6th August 2010 on occasion of the
anniversary of the Hiroshima – Nagasaki Bombing. The students prepared posters
for the rally. The total no. of students who participated was 60.
Mr. Harsh Shah from SYBMM participated in the Utkarsh festival at Sathaye
college on 30th August. Mr. Rahul Jadhav from SYBCom represented the college for
SRD/NRD selection at Sathaye college.
Disaster management cell conducted a 12 days civil defence course from 17th
August 2010 to 1st Sept 2010 in association with Civil Defence Department,
Government of Maharashtra. All activities took place in college auditorium and
45 students of NSS took part in it. Student leaders Neha Mansoori and Mayur
Patil coordinated the programme.
Resource person for this course was

In this course of civil defence the resource person took lecture of two and a
half hours for 12 days. In their lecture they give theory as well as practical
knowledge. They gave fire control and extinguishing training. They also took
lecture on first aid, warning system, #666666 out and disasters. They conducted
practicals on how to lift and treat victims during casualties and natural
disasters, how to use a rope during time of disasters and need, types and use of
bandage and how to use stretcher.At the end of this course an exam of 100 marks
(40 marks practicals and 60 marks theory) was conducted.
As part of their activities the students did patrolling at Bandra fair (Mount
Mary) They did patrolling for three days 16th, 17th & 19th September. The
students reported during these three days at the police station set up near St
Basilica. They helped the officials manage crowd and were also stationed at the
first aid counter. The students participated with full zeal and enthusiasm.
The Red Ribbon Club actively participated in the activities conducted. Prof.
Samya Shinde and Prof. Laila Patel attended the HIV/AIDS Sensitization Workshop
on 7th July 2010 organised by MDACS. In keeping with the activities outlined the
RRC Committee was constituted. Peer educators workshop was conducted by MDACS at
Wadala on 28 and 29th July to which was attended by

The total strength of the RRC is 30 students with Sagar Nagvekar as the student
leader. The peer educators conducted membership drive wherein they enrolled
around 500 members in the RRC.
In August the club distributed Friendship bands provided by MDACS. The Peer
Educators in August conducted class to class campaign sensitizing students about
AIDS/HIV. They conducted group discussion and power point presentation for the
same. The RRC participated in the International Youth Day activity at Sewri on
12th August.
A Seminar on HIV/AIDS was conducted by the college in September. The resource
person was provided by MDACS. The auditorium was packed with 150 students making
the seminar a huge success. The students also asked a number of questions
related to HIV/AIDS.
The students visited Ashray, an NGO of AIDS afflicted and affected children
where they spent some time with the children . They were oriented by the
resource person who gave them a background of the NGO. They organised games and
had entertainment programmes bringing smiles of their faces. They also
contributed food grains to the NGO.
MDACS organized a street play by Varnam Performing Arts Centre on 24th sept
2010 in the college premises. The play got an overwhelming response attended by
about 100 students. Getting encouragement from them the students decided to
organize the same and are busy preparing for performing the street play in
college premises and adopted area to spread awareness.
AIDS awareness exhibition was also conducted in the college. Posters, banners
and slogans were put up in and around the college.
Amit Modi (F.Y.B.COM) and Suraj Yadav (F.Y.B.COM) attended the Leadership Camp
at Sathaye College from 4th Sept 2010 to 8th Sept 2010. The students enjoyed the
residential camp making new bonding friendships and learning leadership
qualities. They enjoyed the various seminars and programmes organized for the
purpose. These students are now helping other students imbibe the same qualities
with success.
The NSS publicity week was held from 24th Sept. 2010 to 2nd Oct 2010.The NSS
day was celebrated with full enthusiasm on 24th Sept 2010.
Report on NSS week celebration
(24th September to 2nd October).
L.S.Raheja College of Arts and Commerce celebrated NSS week from 24th September
to 2nd October.
- A tree plantation drive was organized in our college compound followed by a talk
on environment enrichment by Harsh Shah. Games such as housie, volleyball, hand
wrestling and musical chairs were conducted followed by with some great peppy
songs. The NSS day ended with the national anthem.

Vidyut Kesariya and Harsh Shah represented the college at a district level
elocution competition. Vidyut won at the district level and participated at
university level. He stood 4th at the university level.
Juhu Beach Cleanliness Drive was conducted with United way Mumbai Helpline on
23rd Sept. post Anant Chaturdashi. The students reported early morning to
conduct the cleanliness drive enthusiastically.
On occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and International Non- Violence Day 7 students
with Programme Officer Mrs. Samya Shinde attended the programme organised by NSS
cell of Mumbai University of Vidyarthi Bhavan, Churchgate on 2nd Oct.
As part of closure of Ist phase of malaria awareness campaign a three-day
programme was conducted from 25th October to 27th October, 2010 in coordination
with BMC, United Way Mumbai Helpline and Mumbai University NSS cell. On 25th
October students assembled in the college premises under the guidance of PO
Samya Shinde. They then proceeded towards Santukbai Hall, Vileparle (west) at
10am for the programme. The programme was officiated by BMC officials, United
Way Mumbai Helpline officials and Professor Bharati Unni, NSS District
Co-coordinator. The dignitaries spoke about the success of the campaign and
thanked all the student volunteers who successfully helped them in reducing the
cases of malaria spread that was almost like an epidemic.
On 26th October the students took part in a rally from the college to Chandrabai
Nagar where they performed shows of street play on malaria.
On 27th October at 11.00am the students again visited Chandrabai Nagar and Juhu
Koliwada area. A follow up survey was conducted at Juhu Koliwada.
The students were involved in an environment enrichment programme with “PROJECT
CARE”. The adopted area was “KHOTWADI”, SANTACRUZ (W), where students conducted
a household survey.
The project focused on the issue of waste management. The students also
conducted an interview with bakery owners and stall owners. The students found
out that the major source of waste was small pieces of cloth (chindi) which was
generated from the small cloth industries in that area (KHOTWADI). With the
coordination of BACHAT MAHILA MANDAL and programme officer Miss Saltanat,
Palavi, Shabana, and the students organized a training session on stitching of
bags, 10 women attended this session. We found this session successful, so we
started making cloth bags on a regular basis to sell it in the market to earn
some livelihood for the members of BACHAT MAHILA MANDAL. Students motivated the
women to work in the group and enjoyed the work. The students worked under the
leadership of student leaders Suraj Yadav and Mayur Patil.
The second term started with activities conducted by the Red Ribbon Club. An
Essay competition, a slogan writing competition and a poster making competition
was conducted for the students on themes related to HIV/ AIDS. The response of
the students was overwhelming. On 1st December 2010, on occasion of World AIDS
day an exhibition was held. The students performed a street play in the college
campus and the adopted area. The main theme of the play was on the causes of
AIDS and social discrimination against AIDS victims.
The unit organized a 7 days residential camp from December 5- December 12, 2010
at Depivali village, Vasai. 50 students, accompanied by Professor Samya Shinde,
Professor Seema and Mr Dube involved themselves in cleaning of the village,
leveling of the roads and filling of gunny sacks for creation of temporary dam
in the village. Personality development talks and competitions were conducted
during the camp. Professor Sawant, Professor Venkateswarlu, Professor Kulkarni
and Professor Laila visited the camp to conduct lectures for the students. The
Gram panchayat was cooperative, and motivated and appreciated the students for
the work they were involved in.
From December 27- January 16 the students, in collaboration with United Way,
were actively involved in the Standard Chartered Marathon. The NGO focused on
the theme of Disaster Management and Civic issues. The students were involved in
the administrative work, distribution of collaterals and event management on the
race day. On 16th January 2011, on Athletic day, 15 volunteers participated in
the dream run of 6 kms.
Vidyut Kesariya, Mayur Patil, Suraj Yadav and Shweta Dedhia attended the
western zone seven-day residential camp at Ratnagiri from 26th December to 2nd
January 2011, where about 650 students from all across the country participated.
The students built 11 temporary dams to conserve water for irrigation and daily
use of the villagers. The organizer of the camp ‘GOGATE JOGLEKAR COLLEGE,
RATNAGIRI did good social work.
On 12th January 2011 students participated in the National Youth Day organized
by Ramkrishna Mission in commemoration of Swami Vivekanand at YB Chavan
Auditorium. The National Youth Day was also celebrated in the college premises
remembering the thoughts of Swami Vivekanand.
Blood donation drive was conducted in the college gymkhana on 18th January 2011
with St George Hospital. 82 blood units were collected. The students
enthusiastically participated in the camp.
The National Voters’ Day (25th January 2011) was celebrated in the college. The
NSS volunteers went from class to class to spread awareness on the need to
register as voters, and the importance of voting. On 29th January 2011 the
students participated in the rally at Azad Maidan.
On 30th January 2011, 10 students along with Professor Seema attended a
programme on occasion of Gandhiji’s death anniversary at convocation hall,
Churchgate.
In conclusion, the year was a fruitful year where many students realized their
hidden potentials and leadership qualities. They understood the motto of NSS
“Not me but you” and realized that service to others can be very fulfilling and

B) Red Ribbon Club
Report :
Since the R. R. C is funded by MDAC’s from 2008-2009, many activities are being
conducted.There are a total of 50 volunteers who are members of the RCC club.
The First Programme for the orientation of P. O’s was jointly conducted by the
University of Mumbai & MDAC’s hotel Shantidoot, Dadar wherein all the guidelines
were given for activities to be conducted throught the year. Mrs. Samya shinde
has been guiding the volunteers of the RRC club for the last 2 years. The sample
questionnaire received by Mrs. Kulkarni was handled over to Mrs. Shinde & she
then conducted the survey of different localities & college students through the
volunteers in order to create awareness. The report was sent to the University
of Mumbai & MDAC’s. Dr. Rajratan Lokhande of AVERT International gave an
interesting lecture on the scientific aspects of HIV/ AIDS & he donated many
pamphlets, booklets, brochure & red ribbons also.
On 14th Nov, 2009 a Blood Donation camp & a free Thalassemia check up camp was
organised jointly with St. George Hospital Think Foundation and Lions Club of
Juhu in our college premises. A total of 105 Bottles of Blood were collected &
450 students were checked for Thalassemia. Out of them 2 Thalassemia were
detected to be Thalassemia minor. They were given free counselling by the Think
Foundation. 30 volunteers visited the RRE (i.e.. Red Ribbon Express) Exhibition
at C. S. T. & they tried to create awareness at the railway station.
The leader of RRC , Sagar Nagvekar attended the 3 days Residential camp
organised by MDAC’s at Lonavala for the Peer group Training. His feedback report
along with 2 photographs were accepted by the University Authorities.
Similarly, Sangram Shinde and Ranjeet Yadav attended a 1 day Residential
Orientation Camp for the Red Ribbon Club held at Rizvi College.
C) Eco Club Report
:
Generally Environment enrichment activities are conducted in the seven day
Residential Camp.
On the 4th of Sep, 2009- a cleaning of Juhu Beach campaign was done with Madam
Priya Dutt under the guidance of Mrs. Kulkarni & Dr. Naringrekar.
The Function “ Uddan organised jointly by Yuvak Biradari & the University of
Mumbai for “ Vasundhara Bachhan “at Rizvi College was attended by 10 volunteers
along with Dr. Naringrekar & Mrs. Kulkarni.
Wasim Qureshi (SYBA) attended a special one day Residential Camp at Sathaye
college on Food & Nutrition “ while Pushpanjali Mishra attended a State level 7
day Residential Special Camp at KOSBAD in Thane District on “ Natural Farming “
A workshop by the (Uni. approved NGO) - United Way of India on “ Becoming
Clean-Up Marshalls ”was organised on the 10th of Oct, 2009. 30 volunteers were
given Id-cards by the authorities. These 30 volunteers have adopted “ Relief
Road “ in front of the college to work as “ Clean-Up Marshalls”
A unique programme - entitled “ Men who braved “ saluting the Brave Martyrs of
26th Nov, 2009 (on the 1st anniversary of their death) was organised in the
college which the Senior Police Inspector from Santacruz police station attended
alongwith some visitors, who also lit candles.
This programme was the Brainchild of the “ Best Student ” of the college Aashish
Jain, of T. Y. B.COM. who was the ex-leader of N. S. S.
We also donated Rs. 2000 by helping the sale of Tricolors prepared specially by
the mentally challenged students belonging to “ Hitech International “. The
cheque was handed over to Mr. Ajay Shukla.
It was a moment of pride when Pooja Parab received the Best voluntary Trophy for
the West Zone from the University of Mumbai’s acting vice Chancellor Dr. Krishna
Chandraswamy.
Dr. S. Naringrekar also completed successfully his Refresher course in N. S. S.
Now he is a completely trained N. S. S member alongwith Mrs. Akshata Kulkarni.
Mrs. Akshata Arun Kulkarni, the N. S. S Programme officer was selected to attend
a 5 day National Seminar on the topic “ Training of Trainers” . “ Social Harmony
and National Unity” (i.e. SHANU) at Nagpur jointly organised by the Rajiv Gandhi
National Institute for Youth Development, Sriperambudoor and the N. S. S
Regional Office at Pune from 25th Jan to 29th Jan 2010.
We have introduced the Gandhi Peace Exam conducted by the Sarvodaya Mandal,
Mumbai this year. A total of 13 students participated who were also given
certificates by the Sarvodaya Mandal.
Similarly Two Trophies for the best NSS volunteer have been introduced for one
male and one female Leader of N. S. S by the Principal Dr. M. B. Madlani.
A separate report of the 7 day Residential Camp held at Vanavasi Kalyan Kendra,
Talasari from 14th of Dec. to 20th of Dec. 2009 was submitted to the University
where all the details of the 14 projects of the Environment Enrichment
Programmes are described along with the photographs.
In a nutshell, this year was a very good & active year for the N. S. S.
